HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!

He said we were not 'worms of the dust';
we were reasoning, progressive, inventive
men and women. He said a worm would never
be anything except a worm, but we could
study, and improve ourselves, help others,
make great machines, paint pictures, write
books, and go to an extent that must almost
amaze the Almighty Himself.

I wait and wait for summer to arrive...not too patiently either.
Winter hears me whining and I fussing and carrying on about being cold. Im a whimp and Im spoiled- for I hate being cold. I LOVE my desert heat!! I really dont thaw out until it reaches the 80' here!!
I have this lovely home, full of nice things, here in the desert. And one of the really swanky things is a tiny plastic box on the wall. And in ways that I cant fully comprehend, this little box regulates the temptures in my very own home!! NOTE... my very own home!!!! Im just ask'in....
WHo should have power over this little ingenious box on the wall??!!
Soup the turtle...who eats BBQ hamburger meat for breakfast?
Zoey the dog...who wears a fur coat without complaint...all year long??!!
Fussy kids...who dont pay the bills??!!
Obnoxious kids...who dont even live here??!!
How about the person who is most likely to keep the read-out on that box at the highest, most economicical setting of all??!! THIS WOULD BE MoowAH!!!
Its a constant battle of wills in our home!!
And to add insult to injury....in my very own home I am accused of being demented or sick for my thermaticly challenge(is there such a word?) self. VERY often Im forced into my room so that I can put on more layers (just like in winter) so that Im not freezing in my very own home!! Im mocked and reviled in my very own home!!
So Im a little resentful.
Can you tell??
I'd like some control back please.

and while im on the topic of Arctic environments...
Let me tell you about going out to dinner with my Builder...
There are restaurants and stores that I now completely avoid due to sub-Arctic temperatures inside. Over the years I've learned the places to avoid and the places where it may be worth 'dressing up' with layers and a sweater in order to patronize the place. My favorite places to go are those that have outdoor seating...thats where I am blissfully happy to be.
Happiness is....leaving an establishment through the front doors and greeting a blast of hot air!!!

After a very long, cold winter, i was so looking forward to our summer. But as is with all good things, there always seems to be a down side too. I guess i'll have to more firmly embrace the doctrine we're taught ever since we fledgeling church goers could attend and listen...there does seem to have to be opposition in ALL things!! Even when it comes to temperature variations and thermostat control!
If you're wondering....

That'll be me in the sweatshirt and woolly socks, sitting in my very own home!!! IN JULY!!!
Ba Humbug!!!

(I believe in fate...in synchronicity and all that 'stuff.' How else would I explain that while rummaging through all my vast collection of papers and talks and quotes and articles..... that were in no particular order...and to then have this talk be sitting on the top of the box in the bottom of my closet, for over a year....and to have it happen just this week!!!??? SYNCHRONICITY!!)

ENJOY
" My talk is about the Second Coming, and war, and really its about Memorial Day and what it should mean to the Latter-Day Saints.
The Second Coming figures so prominently with the Latter-Day Saints that the concept is part of our title "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints."
Maybe we should be more properly titled "The Church of honest people trying to obtain righteousness in a time of war, rumors of war, famine, pestilence, pornography, nudeness, lewdness, and general wickedness, by leaving the world behind and following the Savior, even Jesus Christ church." But "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints sounds better and is shorter and more easily remembered.
Doctrine and Covenants 87:2,6
"And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations...And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn...until the consumption decreed hath made a full end of all nations..."
So right now you're probably saying to yourself, "whoa, I didnt sign up for this war stuff..." Yeah, you really did sign up for this, and I can prove it. In the 250th song in our hymn book it starts with ...
"We are all enlisted till the conflict is o're, Happy are we! Happy are we!! Soldiers in the Army there's a bright crown in store, We shall win and wear it by and by!!"
War, wickedness, Second Coming, soldiers, Memorial Day, quite a full plate.
When would this all begin?
The Civil War was to serve as a marker of the beginning of wars and rumors of wars that would result in the death and misery of untold numbers of Heavenly Fathers children.

Over 620,000 soldiers died during the Civil War when brother fought brother, 204,000 from battle wounds, and 416,000 from disease. That's about one third of the population of this state.
War is horrible, but the Civil War was particularly so because of the increased lethality of the rifled musket, and exploding artillery shells that saw their first use on the farm lands of America. As an example, of the 7,000 men who served in the famed Iron Brigade, only 1,000 returned to New York.
Before the Civil War, 20,000 Americans gave their lives to gain and maintain our freedom. Since the first shots of the Civil War, almost 1.2 million Americans have given their lives to preserve our Nation.
Although the American Civil War was the milestone that marked the beginning of this war, the war has been going on since the foundation of this earth.
Revelations 12: 7-9, 17
"And there was a war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, and called the Devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world; he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him...And the dragon was wroth...and went to make war with...[those] which keep the commandments of God, and have a testimony of Jesus Christ."
The war is directed towards us, those who "...keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ." Maybe this is why everyone in the world seems to hate Americans, because America has sheltered and nurtured the church.
Cain slew Able for the Oath's sake, and Able became the first martyr and veteran in the War that began in Heaven and was continued on the earth.
Enoch, the seventh from Adam, sought all his days to purify his people, and it is said of him that so powerful was the word which Enoch spake that "rivers turned from their courses" and "mountains fled before him" And though the 'world' sought to destroy Enoch and his people, they were kept at bay by the power of his word which the Lord gave him.
What is the cause of war and how do we stop it?
From James, Chapter 3:1-4
"From whence come wars and fighting among you? Come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? Ye lust, and have not; ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain; you fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."
In this fight, you cannot sit on the fence. For they that are not with us are against us. If it isnt righteousness, it's wickedness. There are no gray areas.
Armageddon is a word with which all Saints should be familiar. It's name comes from the contraction of "Har Meggido" meaning the mountain or ruins of Meggido, and it lies on the south side of the plains of Esdraelon at the entrance to a cut in the mountains that leads to the plateau of what is now the West Bank. It is the last defensible terrain before Jerusalem and I believe the Schverpunct or the decisive point of the battle of Armageddon and the place where the defense of Isreal will fail just prior to the Second Coming.
This is all very interesting but what does it have to do with America, veterans and Memorial Day?
War is our legacy. It is our birthright and our sacred duty. We were born on this earth because we chose sides in the first War, the War in Heaven. It continues. We are ALL enlisted.
This is a choice land, a holy land. In the Book of Mormon, we are counseled that we must serve the God of this land or be removed.
I believe Satan wants to destroy this United States and I believe it has only been because of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines that we haven't been conquered.
What about these young men and women? The average age of those who die in our wars is 19 years of age; about the same age as our missionaries.
They come from all walks of life, from all religions, from all races. At first they wore blue and gray, later they wore khaki or olive drab, now they wear forest or desert camouflage. In every age they are the same, the American Fighting Man (or woman). They all take the oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies..." Their mottos are "Duty, Honor, Country" or "Ducet Amor Patriae" "Led by LOve of Country", or "Toujour Pret" "Always Ready" or "Semper Fidelius" "Always Faithful". These are their watchwords. When they're hurt, they bleed. When they die, they almost universally whisper the name of the person who is uppermost in their mind and heart, and usually that's their mother.
They sacrifice all their tomorrows for the Cause. They dont do it for conquest or gold, nor for lands or oil.
If you ask them, some would say they did it out of duty, others might say they didnt realize what they were getting into but soon found themselves swept away by the enormity of it all and refused to turn and run. Some would say they did it for their buddies, their band of brothers. Some dont know why they enlisted, it just seemed like the thing to do at the time. None of them expect to die, not really.
Many faced the monstrosities of War and survived to grow old with their wives and children. Some never got older. And when the time came, all prayed to God to spare them, even if only to whisper a silent prayer on their lips. They made deals, promises, asked for forgiveness. Lt. Winters of Echo Company, 506th Airborne Infantry promised God that if he were ever allowed to see his home again, he would live out the rest of his days in peace. They were frightened...They werent saints, most were away from home for the first time and some wandered in forbidden fields. Some, a very few, did things in the heat of battle they ordinarily wouldnt have done. Whatever their sacrifice, whatever their failings, whatever their strengths and their weaknesses, one must stand in awe at their collective courage and the sum of their sacrifice. Viewed from this perspective, it is truly awe inspiring.
We left 117 thousand dead and suffered 204 thousand wounded in WW1 to keep France free. Great Britain and France demanded and extracted reparations from Germany. We didnt ask for anything. We conquered the German and Japanese, suffered 407 thousand dead and 671 thousand wounded and gave them back their countries better, stronger, and free. We protected the freedom of Korea with 34 thousand war dead and 103 thousand wounded and never asked for anything in return except maybe friendship. We sacrificed 59 thousand dead and 153 thousand wounded to try to bring freedom to the land of Vietnam. We've lost almost ??? in Afghanistan and Iraq and it continues.
In all these wars, we havent asked for anything in return for our sacrifice except for a little piece of earth where we could bury and honor our dead.
1.2 million honored dead.
Let me tell you about one of them.

An American Civil War Letter

In 1861, a Union officer named Sullivan Ballou, assigned to the Grand Army of the Potomac, wrote home to his wife on Smithfield, Rhode Island.

July 14, 1861,
Dear Sarah,
The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days, perhaps tomorrow and lest I should not be able to write you again, I feel compelled to write a few lines that may fall upon your eyes when I am no more.
I have no misgivings about or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged. And my courage neither halts nor falters. I know now how American civilization now leans upon the triumph of our government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. I am willing, completely willing, to lay down all my joy in this life to help maintain this government and to pay that debt.
Sarah, my love for you is deathless and seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but omnipotence can break. Yet my love of country comes over me like a strong wind and bares me irresistibly with all those chains to the battlefield. The memory of all the blissful moments I have enjoyed with you come crowding over me and I feel most deeply grateful to God and you that I have enjoyed them for so long. And oh Sarah, how hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes of future years when God willing we may still have lived and loved together and see our boys grown to honorable manhood around us. Sarah, if I do not return, never forget how much I loved you. Nor, that when my last breath escapes me on the battlefield, it will whisper your name. Forgive my many faults and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless, how foolish I have sometimes been. But Sarah, my dear, dear Sarah, if the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they love, I shall always be with you in the brightest day and darkest night. Always. Always. And when the soft breeze fans your cheek it shall be my breath, or the cool air upon your throbbing temple, it shall by my spirit passing by.
Sarah, do not mourn me dead. Think only that I am gone and wait for me. For we shall meet again. My dearest Sarah. We shall meet again.

Captain Sulliva Bellou was killed a week later at the first battle of Bull Run.

In the movie "Saving Private Ryan," Captain Miller lies mortally wounded at the bridge. Private Ryan, the man he and eight others had died to save pulled close to him when he saw that Captain Miller was trying to say something.
His words were simple yet penetrating, and worth remembering for all of us. "Earn this."
This Memorial Day, remember them the best way you can.
1.2 million honored dead. Be a friend of God and "earn this." Do your duty to your family, to your community, to your country and to your God and "earn this." The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. "earn this." Honor your priesthood and "earn this." Stand in holy places and be not moved and "earn this."

(THANK YOU Bill Pratt!!! Though I truly cant recall where I may know you from.....please forgive me for taking the liberty of 'publishing' this most excellent talk for my blog world to read!!)

5 1/2 yrs

We are headed north today...to go and honor this little boy, who has grown to be a very fine young man!!
Tomorrow he'll have the daunting task of speaking in Church. The challenge there is to not become a blubbering idiot because ones emotions are so tender at this time in life...or..to try and sound as though you are a spiritual giant and completely ready for the huge task at hand. Good luck on either account Josh. In 11 days Elder Sharp will check into the MTC for 3 weeks to become spiritually charged and to gain confidence and know-how.
Then he'll soon find himself wandering the metropolis of Houston, Texas...where Anna trod as well...wondering what the heck he got himself into!!

It took 18 yrs of careful, tender care to get this young man, and any young man to this point in their lives. To leave behind the comforts of home and family and all things familiar- plus the joy of basketball or any other love for that matter, is tough. How grateful we all are that so many young men in our family have made this sacrifice in their lives....and gone and served. I havent heard a one of them express an ounce of regret!! And that of course goes for the women too!!
All missionaries seem to agree....
IT'LL BE THE BEST TWO YEARS OF THEIR LIVES!!!!
Just be obedient and brave!!!

GOOD LUCK JOSH WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH

It has to be the mornings!!!
Mornings are really good for me. Even when Im stumbling out of bed, before the sun rises, and setting my sites on auto-pilot as I drive to "work".... I love seeing the bright smiling faces of fellow hiking guides, as we wait for instruction for that mornings hike. We're a diverse group of people-we hiking nuts. We are old and young, fit and grateful too.
We enjoy reporting the previous days adventures and escapades and then speculating on what the morning will bring us with a new batch of guests. We watch the sunrise from the windows of our vans as we drive to our various hikes, and try and build a sense of anticipation for the upcoming trek. Then we hike!! ya, ya, giddy-up folks!!!
The world is a glorious place when you hike.
Yep....mornings are the BEST!!!

BUt wait!!!

I forget about Lunch TIme!!
THere's food and little relaxing...sometimes a lot of relaxing and even a nap!!! There's often some serious chill'in going on out back by the pool...reading, sunning my legs, contemplating my navel for a moment. Our backyard is full of wondrous fragrances-honeysuckle, jasmine, mint, pool chlorine, sunblock, etc, etc... There was a time when I could be found in the pool, floating my big bottom in an ugly black inner-tube and reading a book! Those days are gone....wrinkles on my face make it glaringly apparent that I had better quit this adolescent behavior...NOW!!
Ahhhhh....yes, lunch time is the grandest!!!

Dang!!!

What about that time right as the sun is going down!!???
The yard is shady and inviting. Its cooled down a very small increment, and dinner is done. I am anticipating my head hitting my pillow. (remember, my day starts at 5:15am!) I love that I sleep so well. Its a blessing I know. So....at dusk...I wander the perimeter of our property and watch Zoey chase a few last shadows. I take in the pleasant sound of our silly little fountain/pond in the back yard and wonder why the toad has stopped ribbiting????
It doesnt get any better than this does it???

OH HeCK.....!!!!

I almost forgot dinner time!!!
Dinner is at its very best when its done at the water park in town. All the little kids are there, cooling their toes and having a delightful time. We know its one of L's favorite places to hang. Dinner in the park with the grandkids is the best!! The kids romp and we stretch out on the blanket thrown out on a shady spot of lawn....ahhhhhhhhhh.....now thats a good time!!!

What's your favorite time of day!!
Mine is anytime......as long as its SUMMER!!!
I am tired, blissfully tired.

My feet hurt!!
And when my feet ache, I feel tired!!!
Its truly amazing how fast I can wear out a pair of hiking shoes when I hike in them almost every day.
Lets see....
I hike between 4-6 miles every weekday...
The average being 5 miles times 5 days...
25 miles a week, give a take a few....
Yep...my feet are amazing!!
Plus....
Many of our hikes are up and over and through some pretty wicked lava flows. Basalt rock is murder on the soles of shoes!!
So I'm very excited to report that my brand new, spiffy KEENS are on the way to my waiting feet!! (thanks Joe my love!) I love having Christmas in May!!
I wore my last KEENS for over 3 years!!
I have no way of computing how many miles I put on them. I wore them even when I wasnt hiking. My favorite place to wear them was trekking down to Havasupi each summer. Many, many, many miles were tread by them (and me!).
I even took them a few times to the shoemaker for a little touch-up work, to keep them going for as long as possible.
I LOVE, love, LoVe the KEEN hiking sandal!!

They are cute, cute, cute and practical too!!
Perfection!!

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A 'MORMON?'

I get this question every once in a while.
I struggle with my reply.
It needs to be clear and concise, and not emotional and stammering.
I wish my reply could be as Almas in the Book of Mormon-

I wish to be a Mormon who is better at bearing my neighbors burdens, and to be able to mourn with those that mourn. I strive to be a Mormon who will comfort those in need of comfort. I should always stand as a firm witness of Jesus Christ.
I believe in revelation, for myself and for the world in general. Which in turn means that I believe in prophets and apostles. Because I know that God is unchanging.

I suppose that's 'Mormonism' in a nutshell, a very small nutshell.

Of course it goes without saying that we believe in 'unique' principles as well. But NO Multiple wives!! No drugs or alcohol. No sexual relations before marriage. We embrace the 10 commandments and dont feel they are 'out-dated." The paying of tithing is essential too.

I have taken the liberty of interviewing those around me with this question:

WHAT DOES BEING A MORMON MEAN TO YOU?

ANNA: hummmmmmmmmmmm....it means.........being Christ-like, obedient, and it means being happy. It also means being a servant in the Lords kingdom. It means preparing yourself and others for the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ.

MY BUILDER:striving to be a better person, because of all the examples we have, in ancient times, and with our pioneers, and now, with our prophets and apostles. Its also about striving to help other people better themselves and to fulfil their potential.

BRI-DOG:follow the Prophet!

LYNLEY: ummmmm....the first thing I think of is the Boy Scout stuff, you know, the being honest, true, chaste, and benevolent.

JUSTUS: It means being a good person and following Jesus Christ-those are the two things that pop to mind first.

any more question.....??? go HERE!!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR...

Its a rare thing to find a Broadway play that has been recorded for DVD, to be an enjoyable and entertaining success. I know, I've tried a few times, with no reward. But....Im happy to report that I have finally found one!
INTO THE WOODS!!!
In my attempts to try and explain to cousin Lynley why this show was so much fun, I found myself skipping all over the disk, letting her see for herself just how clever it is. The songs are entrancing. The acting is first rate. The prince's are dashing.
Give it a try, and see just how entertaining it can be when a very talented mind(Steven Sondheim) decides to combine a whole bunch of our favorite fairy tales together and weaves his own yarn to delight us.
THe woods is where we see what mettle were made of; where we face our fears and fulfil our hearts desires.
And remember my advice....
*Never fully trust a Prince Charming.
*Little Red Riding Hood is no child to be messed with.
*Rapunzel cant possibly remain sane after living out her life in a tower!
*Fairy tales were as 'grim' as the Brothers Grimm could make them. Watch out for the implied gore...ie the step sisters feet will NEVER fully recover from the 'marring' they take in order to slip into golden slippers!! Yuck!!!
*Witches, wolves and giants will forever get and deserve a bum rap.

So give this one a try!!
It will be unlike anything you have seen before- except for on Broadway perhaps.
See if you too will come away amazed at the talent it takes to write lyrics so entertaining and engaging.
I think musicals rock!!

Im a Womens Conference junkie.
Im a self proclaimed movie junkie as well.
Mix W.C. with a 3 day sleep over and there's always a movie night!
This year we choose a movie that none of us had heard of before. (often a risky thing to do)
Thurs. night we watched a movie entitled SWEET LAND.
We were far from disappointed!!!
Here we found a tender tale; a prairie love story to put a finer point on it. An American immigrant love story and experience.
It was ideal watching this with a gaggle of romantic ladies. We found ourselves "coaching" with vehement passion, the struggling couple throughout their ordeals.
Anna was incredulous that there ever was or is such a thing as 'mail-order brides!! (poor sheltered child)
I've recommended quite a few movies to you my readers over the last year or so...I hope that I have built your trust. Grab a girlfriend, and please find yourself enjoying this visually delectable tale!!

And now, switching genre's completely!!!!
By Builder bravely went where only the best of husbands go....to the long lines and late night showing of the new STAR TREK movie with crazy me!!
As soon as I learned that J.J. Abrams- my favorite producer/director of all things "other worldly" was getting his creative head wrapped around the Star Trek saga, I KNEW I wouldnt be disappointed with a 'remake.' But....it really isnt a remake, at a foreshadow of things pre-Enterprise; and the telling of how the womanising, rambunctious James Kirk becomes the captain of the Enterprise, and how he meets up with his quirky crew.
The movie was all that I"d hoped it to be!! It was funny, laugh out-loud funny, it was high adventure, and the special effects and aliens and villain were out of this world. (pun intended)
Gone are the days when I sat in a neighbours basement to watch William Shatner and Leonard Nemoy warp into the final frontiers of the the galaxy!! I was a pre-teen, living in Maryland when I became hooked--ie. a junkie to the sci-fi stuff.

There is genius behind beginning again with a whole new cast of beautiful young actors. Im sure that I will soon be found sitting once again in a darkened, overly air conditioned theater, watching more adventures of the star-ship Enterprise.
ahhhhhh yes, life is good!!
(I thought I'd go ahead and share with my"blog world," the talk I gave this morning in Church. It's a little long-sorry.)

The errand of angels is given to women;
And this a gift that as sister, we claim;
To do whatsoever is gentle and human,
To cheer and to bless in humanity’s name.

hymn # 309

I’ve been told that Im not a happy, delightful person when Im having to prepare a talk for Sacrament Meeting. I found my family giving me a wide girth whenever they noticed my furrowed brow. I heard it mumbled under a certain someone’s breath that maybe a short vacation was warranted while I prepared. Just let it be known that there are few things I enjoy LESS than public speaking. Very few things. Ironically, one other thing on that short list of dislikes…. Would be Mothers Day!!! Needless to say…it hasn’t been the best of weeks at the Stephenson home. Couple this with the realization that In the next several weeks my nest completely empties of all young life!! And NOW Im ready for my pity party!!! The highlight of this day???? Sitting down when this is through, and a glorious phone call from a much missed missionary son-in Chile!!! Please don’t get me wrong…I LOVE being a mother, I just don’t love Mothers Day. And you should know IM blissfully happy being a grandmother too.
My dear husband has made life and parenthood something joyful beyond measure. I have been greatly blessed in so many ways. Too many to number.

My sweet Anna has a theory that only a returned missionary could concoct, about why speaking in public make s me sick with discomfort…but this would supply enough material for a separate talk, which WONT be happening!!!
But I would like to share a theory I have about why Mothers Day is not my favourite holiday. And Im willing to bet that I am not alone in my opinion in this either.
I find that few people enjoy having all their faults and shortcomings pointed out to them. So its truly a quandary to why there is a national holiday that makes it permissible to do so. We are the gender that seems to thrive on quilt or at least attract it like bugs to a light. I know that I never enjoyed having my mothering skills, or that lack there of, examined from a pulpit. When I was a young mother-it seemed all the fashion to expound on what Molly Mormon Mother should look like. I never resembled the ideal.
I like to compare this discomfort to me going to the Mall. I rarely go to the Mall, but when I do, I quickly discover how very frumpy I am, which Is something Im fairly oblivious to most of the time. Until I go to the Mall, then its glaringly apparent!! The same applies to Mothers Day. I can go along my merry way, trying my best at being a mom, and then low and behold-Mothers Day arrives, opening sore spots, and dumping quilt and causing remorse. Who needs this!!!??? Our own kids do a fine enough job of this.!!!
But now Im older, and wiser, I hope, and enjoy a thicker skin as well. Somewhere along the way I learned that life is NOT a Contest!!! Especially not an Americas Best Mother Contest!! Im not in competition with anyone, and you shouldn’t be either!!!
Those that know me know that Im not a competitive soul. Some of you may think that’s a good thing- many of you may think that makes me a sorry case. I think the jury is still out on whether contests or competitiveness is good, bad or indifferent. But I’ve been asking myself for some time now- these questions.
First- why do we expect everything to be hard?
Second- Does there have to be a winner and thus a looser?
Does someone always come in first, making others last?
Is life really a contest?
Where does this type of competitive nature come from?
I found a cute example of this competitiveness raring its ugly head in an old Womens Conference book.
"if i can save up just a little, i could buy a beautiful widget. And if i had me a really nice widget, make out of quality plastic, and fancier than my neighbour's widget, i think i could be satisfied." So you get yourself a nice widget-a big screen, high-speed, digitised, space-age widget-and you feel great for a while. But you find yourself longing for more things-bigger widgets, fancier widgets. And when you go to your class reunion, you worry that all your old friends have collected more widgets than you have. The worst thing is, you keep telling yourself, "Money cant buy happiness. What really matters to me is family, Church, and friends." And you believe it. But, oh, those widgets. They have siren voices, and they call to you as your drive past the store. You know they're in there, and if you dont get them-on sale- someone else will.
Does being a good mother depend on how many extra-curricular activities planned for Man, our kids are involved in? Is it failure if your child isn’t on the honor roll or on a certain sports team, etc. ETC, ETC!!!
Think about this: when we face our Heavenly Parents, do you think they’ll care about the exciting rat race we’ve been running? Or care that we’re out ahead???!! I think we’ll quickly discover and learn instead that IM exactly as important as you are to Them. And you are exactly as important to them, as I am. Im important. You’re important, and we’re ALL important to our Heavenly Parents!!!
I believe I have finally learned- there can be no competition one with another. There can be no comfort in winning and loosing. Ask yourself why it is that the greatest part of what we LONG for, and compete for, in this world, really doesn’t matter!! Its such a hard lesson to learn. What matters is family, faith, and caring for our fellowmen!
I’ll say it once again--I really am convinced that Life doesn’t have to be hard. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Sure there are peaks and valleys along the way. But I truly believe our Heavenly Father wants us to enjoy the journey!! ( 2 Nephi 2)
Don’t you think its possible – even probable that we moms, who are often going crazy trying to deal with diapers and soccer games and brain dead teenagers-often all at the same time- and are giving it all the very best we can; will we suddenly find ourselves at a finish line as a winner or in a tie, or possibly a looser? OR!!!!.... is it more probable that there is no first? That it wasn’t a contest at all. Isnt it possible that we have nothing to prove to each other? Our test is how well we will love one another. How Christ-like we can become. Isnt it highly probable that we as women will all stand to gain or “win” so much more if we only support and help each other, instead of feeling like we have to win every prize in order to make us feel worth while?? I know that’s not how I enjoy my life-by one upping my fellow female!!! There is no denying that “Lengthening our Stride” is a good thing!!! President Hinckley asked us to be our very best! We understand that we must aim high. I guess Im just suggesting to not feel like one has to WIN the game by leaving others behind- for a game that the WORLD invented by the way, not our loving Heavenly Parents and Savior. I truly do find joy when I strive to be more Christ-like. I find joy in supporting others. Im happier when I think the best of others. Life is good when Im cooperating instead of competing!!! We please our Heavenly Father best when we love one another, when we love our family and when we feed His sheep!! These 3 things aren’t hard to remember-not really. But it does become difficult when we let the competitive world scream in our ears that other things matter more!!! The world screams aggressiveness and greed and the merits of physical beauty for example. Resisting the vacuum-like effect of worrying about beauty is another hard lesson to learn in this world. Realising that outward beauty doesn’t equal happiness is a tough one. The world teaches us differently to be sure. If I buy into this prevalent notion -I’ll never be good enough. THere is ALWAYS someone prettier and thinner and having a better hair day than me!! ALWAYS!!! And the older one gets and the more experience one gets under her belt, you learn that the things that were once pretty and firm do eventually droop and drag, and no amount of cosmetics will help!!! Such is Life!!!
And you don’t really want to get me going on how I feel the world views the sacred roll of motherhood!! The world has ruined Christmas, and I think it has tainted and disqualified the important role of motherhood as well. We’ve all heard the lip service to motherhood that floats in the air around us and feels as insubstantial as dandelion tufts. Oprah spouts off fairly often, flattering words, words that sounds as tinkling brass, through the airwaves about how she believes that Motherhood is the most important job in the world.
President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying- “The good mother, the wise mother…is more important to the community than even the ablest man; her career is more worthy of honor and is more useful to the community than the career of any man, no matter how successful.”
These are wonderful accolades- But I find, here on the ground, here in the trenches, where real mothers live, there is still a great lack of respect and real recognition for what it means to be a mother. Actions and attitudes are speaking much louder than these nice words. Most people (except for here in Utah maybe) Most people, like infants in a crib, take mothering and nurturing, completely for granted. I know you know what I mean. Stay at home moms are equated with “doing nothing” all day long!! We have no stature, we’re viewed as “just Housewives” Everyone seems to agree that we are essential to a healthy civilization, but……….sometimes the flowery tributes feel a little disingenuous.
So I ask you ladies to please remember-we are more divine than we are temporal, and only Satan would have us think otherwise. Satan is waging war against the women of the world, and its coming from all sides. Let us make sure we BELIEVE that we are central to the survival of all that good in this world. Let us not forget what Pres Hinckley told us so tenderly about the divine purpose of women-“ As His final creation, The crowning of His glorious work, He created woman. I like to regard Eve as His masterpiece after all that had gone before, the final great work before He rested from His labors.” Genesis talks so much about all the “good” that was created in the beginning , and then goes on to worry about the one thing that was “not Good” that being Adam without a woman, and remedying it by creating Eve, which was “Very GOOd”
May we find causes to rejoice in our womenhood ladies!! May we stand firm in our conviction that the family unit IS CENTRAL to our Heavenly Parents plan for us. May our eyes be opened to the fact that without the family unit, everything , and I mean everything, else will fail. There can be no compromising with Satan. We are either for him or against Him in his war against the woman and her family and our innate gift of nurturing. And may we know how to teach our families and our girls this important concept as well.
I believe as dear Pres. Kimball did, when he said-“God has placed woman at the very headwaters of the human stream.” Our power and influence as women on society is really sometimes incomprehensible!!! May we pray for strength and guidance. The road ahead will be a difficult one to keep on course.
When a national leader came to visit with a Prophet of God, he was quoted as saying-
"The family is so critical; it is so fundamental to the strength of our civilization, a fact that seems to be forgotten. It is so terribly important. It is our chief source of moral strength, our chief source of physical and emotional health; it is our chief source of protection against adversity. It isthe only institution that guarantees an environment which will insure the perpetuation of principles and concepts that have made us strong.
"I remember a witness," he said, "that was testifying before a Congressional committee about the family, and he said, 'Before you fool around with the family, you'd better realise that all known human societies during the recorded history of mankind have all ended up with a family organisation for the rearing and training of children. Before you try to get rid of it, you'd better find out why all civilisations in history have clung to it."
I am so grateful for the amazing mothers in my life. My own mother who serves tirelessly, day in and day out where-ever she is needed, and Who loves unconditionally.
And there is my dear mother-in-law, who is a powerful example of quiet, prayerful patience.
And to two incredibly beautiful, talented daughter-in-laws who seemed to come to this earth and into married life with more mothering abilities than I ever acquired in all my years of trying!!! It will be women like these that will have the ability and know how to raise a triumphant generation to battle with the evils of this decaying world.

I am so humbled by each of these very important women in my life. And Im so very grateful to know them and love them and to have them love me and to have their examples in my life.
Remember that we woman have been called to do a work for the Lord. And whom the Lord calls, the Lord qualifies!!
There is only one page left to
write on. I will fill it with
words of only one syllable. I
love.I have loved. I will love.

Carly's having a birthday!! And there's cause to celebrate! She's a delightful young woman; a gift and a blessing to her family and her dear friends. She made it through her first year of college, and she didnt even get engaged!! Way to go Carly!!! Of course she had a blast as she spent her first school year away from home, as every freshman should!! She is missed by her family left at home, and she is missed when she cant come down here for even a visit. I love that she comments on my blog...she stalks me a little!!! What a compliment!! Shes fun, has a dear heart, and the world is hers for the taking.
We all cant wait to see what this next year will bring her.
Happy Birthday Carly!!
In the spring when everything is so
beautiful and green and budding, I
feel like turning my back on lessons,
and running away to play with the
weather.

There really is nothing like a good road trip for me to become reflective of my life, and my goings on. Add an event like Women's Conference and a session at the Temple, and conclude it all with a visit to my college stomping grounds and I become a veritable sage!!
Women's Conference with all its estrogen, and service projects and words of encouragement, plus the fabulous food....Never, never disappoints!!! When asked what my favorite part of the conference would be, I find it tough to answer. It must have something to do with there being 20,000 women, all of our faith, singing hymns, and having the Spirit witness to me over and over again that Im a child of a loving Heavenly Father and a women of worth. To feel that my Savior truly is aware of me. Hang'in with my daughter and dear friends, spending a complete day in service, and eating the most amazing, delectable Italian food this side of the Rockies!!! How do I pick just one thing???

Then there's some icing added to the cake. Being in the Temple with my nephew, who was attending for his very first time! To be within those sacred walls with loved ones- such a blessing!

The cherry on top.....
Logan, Utah in the spring!!! oh my!!! I'd forgotten how green and lush and blooming Cashe Valley can be. Its really not all about the winters in Logan!! Sweet daughter and I went up there expecting a difficult time choosing a place for her to live as she attends USU. Things dont have to be hard!! Really they dont! We looked and looked and called and called and didnt stop until she found a place that made her happy and planted a smile on her beautiful face from ear to ear!!! It took 4-5 hours is all. And it was fun! Not complicated!

Oh...I almost forgot all about those tasty little sprinkles on top of it all!!!
This would be seeing the sweet face of dear Stephanie, one day after her return home from Argentina. She served a full time mission there, and returned with honor and a great deal of anticipation for what will happen next. There is nothing better that those bright shining countenance's that develop while serving our Savior!! And there's also nothing like that 'deer in the head-lights' look that accompanies coming back into the 'world' either!!!

Driving home I filled the quiet times with thoughts of things I'd improve in my life; of things I'd like to get done.
*Clark deserves more snail mail from his mother.
*My patio will be done!
*Temple attendance moves to the top of the list-once again.
*My talk will not cause me undo stress!
*Un-cluttering is a high priority.
*Finding joy in an empty nest must be attained.
*I'll put music back on my blog.
*Food storage will become organized and enhanced.
*I'll write more letters.
*I"ll be checking into more college classes

Whew!!! Thats enough reflection for one road trip dont you think!!??

MAKE LOVE NOT WAR!

Most people dont live; they just race.
They are trying to reach some goal far
away on the horizon, and in the heat of
the going they get so breathless and
panting that they lose all sight of the
beautiful, tranquil country they are
passing through; and then the first
thing they know, they are old and worn
out, and it doesnt make any difference
whether they've reached the goal or not.
I've decided to sit down by the way and
pile up a lot of little happiness's,...

I've done something new and different in my front hall. I am pleased and excited about the results. I think it more fully expressed who I am!!
I LOVE Red!! (and yellow too)
I live in a Spanish style home.
Its a bit dark and boxy.
And...I never intend on taking myself too seriously either.
SO I DID THIS....

My Builder says I've denigrated the entry.
My family rolls their eyes. (boy, it seems like I cause a great deal of eye-rolling around here.)
What do you think?
I know that it makes me smile.
I feel no regrets.
(Dont you just LOVE the story of Ferdinand the Bull and his peace-lov'in ways!?)
