Stephenson Family Ties The Barn Burnt Down
And Now I See The Moon
If the day and night be such that you greet
them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like
flowers and sweet-scented herbs, is more
elastic, more immortal - that is your success.
All nature is your congratulation, and you have
cause momentarily to bless yourself.

Remember how magical the dawning of summer was for me?
One morning we saw 6 tortoises on the trail.
We had amazing guests who where excited to be hiking with us.
June was relatively cool.
I hiked almost every single morning for months.
We stumbled upon rattlers without any consequence.
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches tasted delicious to me...on lunch breaks in the desert.
My Keens fit perfectly and allowed me to gather coral dust between my toes!!!
All was blissful.
And then I teased you about a forthcoming treat that I was anxious to share with you, which, it turns outs, I promptly let get away from me in all the hubbub that June and July brought.
Well now is as good a time as any to finally share with you what we discovered early in June on the dirt road down from Third Ravine!!

Who could be as lucky as I...to come across what appears to be a hatchling tortoise!!?? Stuff like this just doesnt happen. Maybe once in a life time. The child in me couldn't resist picking the little guy up and snapping a few shots...before moving him safely to the side of the bike path. Yes...it was possible that the little guy could escape the prowling eyes of his enemies...like ravens and coyotes, and then meet death by the tread of a speeding downhill mountain biker!! A biker who would be completely unaware that he was even there in the path...for he was so tiny and unexpected!!! That is how I justify my handling of the little guy. Can I confess to you how BADLY I wanted to slip the little tyke into my pocket and take him home?
I felt GREATLY blessed that day for this unique and spiritual experience with a baby desert tortoise encountered in the wild. Life is full of simple little gifts...that sometimes arent so simple, but quite extraordinary and singular!!!
