We have new visitors to our yard, because of this simple feeder. Wee yellow and black finches now congregate here and finish off a sack of seed every other day!! (such pigs they are-for such small frames!)

We have counted as many as 10 sweet birds clinging to the holey sack of seeds, holey sack of seeds, sack of seeds (so fun to say!)

Thank heavens the predatory sparrow hawk seems to have vacated the neighborhood for the winter. Our petite, feathered friends are free to loiter in the yard for as long as they please.
( I really do believe its time for a new camera for little ole me! You just cant see their bright yellow chests and black stripes on these precious birds!)
Ok-well it seems I lied!! Looking out the window the other day, I spied this preditory fowl hanging out not 15 feet from my nose! There wasnt a sparrow nor finch to been seen for miles!! Go figure!!

He hung around long enough to be sure we got some pictures of him and to admire his beady yellow eyes... then off he flew to find his next downy meal.

P.S. I was hiking with some fun ladies the other day, and we got to doing a little bird watching in the park....and one of them mentioned that a sure sign of old age was a new-found intrest in birds. She gave me the impression that only senior citizens bought birdseed and bird feeders. Could this be true? I just may have to yank out the feeders and quit buying 25lbs of seed at Walmart! I'm not a senior citizen--YET!!
P.S.S.-beautiful hawk pics were taken with Chelsea's fancy camera!See the difference? I have camera envy

Don't ever take your bird feeders away! I love the birds right outside your window!
I hope the boys will have fun today, it is snowing though, so I don't know! Gosh, I hope they're safe.
Join the world of old lady bird watchers. I hooked my Mom on it too - thus the MULTIPLE bird feeders, including a finch feeder, at my Dad's place. There are some AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL little finches that visit my Dad's backyard on a regular basis. Along with a dozen different other birds.
Quick bird story - a few years back Dave was walking from our driveway up to the front porch when a large hawk SWOOPED right past his head, headed straight to the tall bird feeder in the yard, picked off a little sparrow and continued his flight across the yard and over the roof! Made Dave jump a little bit but he said it was COOL! And one day I looked out the back window to see a hawk very similar to the one in your picture (it looks like a juvenile) sitting on my garden fence eating a sparrow. He ate for an hour or so, vegged for another couple of hours, and then left. In the meantime I called all the neighbor kids to come and watch the bird from my kitchen window. It was a fun day having all the neighbor kids tramp in and out to check the progress of the meal!
I say hogwash to those who say bird watching is for senior citizens!
