WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A 'MORMON?'

I get this question every once in a while.
I struggle with my reply.
It needs to be clear and concise, and not emotional and stammering.
I wish my reply could be as Almas in the Book of Mormon-

I wish to be a Mormon who is better at bearing my neighbors burdens, and to be able to mourn with those that mourn. I strive to be a Mormon who will comfort those in need of comfort. I should always stand as a firm witness of Jesus Christ.
I believe in revelation, for myself and for the world in general. Which in turn means that I believe in prophets and apostles. Because I know that God is unchanging.

I suppose that's 'Mormonism' in a nutshell, a very small nutshell.

Of course it goes without saying that we believe in 'unique' principles as well. But NO Multiple wives!! No drugs or alcohol. No sexual relations before marriage. We embrace the 10 commandments and dont feel they are 'out-dated." The paying of tithing is essential too.


I have taken the liberty of interviewing those around me with this question:


WHAT DOES BEING A MORMON MEAN TO YOU?


ANNA: hummmmmmmmmmmm....it means.........being Christ-like, obedient, and it means being happy. It also means being a servant in the Lords kingdom. It means preparing yourself and others for the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ.

MY BUILDER:striving to be a better person, because of all the examples we have, in ancient times, and with our pioneers, and now, with our prophets and apostles. Its also about striving to help other people better themselves and to fulfil their potential.


BRI-DOG:follow the Prophet!

LYNLEY: ummmmm....the first thing I think of is the Boy Scout stuff, you know, the being honest, true, chaste, and benevolent.

JUSTUS: It means being a good person and following Jesus Christ-those are the two things that pop to mind first.
