"Ls" Book of the Week...or My Indulgence!

"Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult
to eradicate from the heart whose soul has never
been loosened or fertilized by education; they
grow there firm as weeds among stones."
From:
Jane Eyre
by: Charlotte Bronte

I was remembering this book as a small child. It was first printed as a small, palm-sized book, easy for a child to handle. Im also remembering the vivid, simple pictures using primary colors. There were greens and purples and reds and blue and of course that bright yellow ring of butter around the base of the palm tree!!
The other completely random thing I recall when Im thinking about this book-is that somehow, for some unknown reason, I associate this book with my cousin Ann!! And even stranger still, I associate it to her home in upstate New York!! How can this be? Is it even real?? We were so young at this time in our lives!! How does a brain latch on to such a completely random memory?? I dont recollect ANYTHING else about their home in New York...just reading or having Little Black Sambo read to us!! I think this boarders on the bizarre!!!
And the reason Im calling this book "my indulgence" is this...I stumbled upon the newer version at the library not to long ago. I was instantly charmed, and won over, and had to have a copy of my own!!! This newer version has the same exact words of the original story that was published in 1899, but its new and improved by its illustrations!! Thank heavens Christopher Bing got a hold of the story. He has 'tweaked' it to where we still enjoy the same clever, joyful boy who outwits a handful of tigers, but we arent subjected to the picaninny racist images which I suppose were commonly seen in the early half of the 20th century. Christopher Bings improvements are beautiful, as is the plain simple story!! Sambo can be any little boys hero!!!

Thanks for your great suggestions and dedication to books! It's so easy to spend time with this electronic gadget I'm typing on and not enough with the written word.

Although I remember quite a bit about our time in Ithica, I also remember this book. It belonged to my father when he was a boy and I remember that it always made him very uncomfortable. It was not a book we kept "out" partly because it was old, and partly because he thought it terribly racist. I don't have this book. I hope Paul does.
