Stephenson Family Ties The Barn Burnt Down
And Now I See The Moon

BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY

EXTRAVAGANT KINDNESS

There is enough to spare.
Im not sure how to explain why I so strongly believe this. I wasnt raised this way. I was raised to believe that families must have only 2.3 children per family. I was led to believe there are too many people here on earth. I was also led to believe that there was not enough food for everyone. "eat that!!...there are starving people in China that would shudder to think any food would be wasted!!" (which of course we know to be true) We've heard for years that there's not enough water; that there's not enough air; that there's not enough land. Why is it we so adamantly cling to the notion that everything on the earth has become scarce??!!

This is what I have come to understand:
Several years ago the World Hunger Project stunned the the world by announcing that there was enough food on this planet to feed everyone!!
Guess what the problem really is?!?!
Its NOT scarcity!
Its politics that prevents the distribution of the ample food supply. Grain rots in silos while people starve in Africa!! (which leads into yet another HOT topic of contention!)

Here is what I believe:
That the earth really is 'full' and that there is enough to spare.
I also believe that this glorious planet is alive; that its a living breathing organism and not just a hunk of sedimentary rock. (my dad is probably rolling his eyes right now) I think this magnificent planet is very much alive and in fact can even heal itself is left to its own devices. I'll even go so far and radical sounding to wager that this planet may even have the capacity to regulate its' own temperature and atmosphere!! And it does this so that it can support life!!! (You can go here and check out the Gaia theory)

Im also think'in:
*God didnt create this glorious planet in terms of scarcity. Once again I think He created it with joy and abundance and generosity and diversity in mind. This world truly is full!!!
*God expects us to be WISE stewards-of course!!!
*God expects us to share and to not be greedy and 'political' with our great blessings!!
*I recognize God's hand in everything!!
An American poet- Robinson Jeffers, wrote about God's extravagances so beautifully in a poem entitled-
THE EXCESSES OF GOD.
Is it not by his high superfluousness we know
Our God? For to be equal a need
Is natural, animal, mineral: but to fling
Rainbows over the rain
And beauty above the moon, and secret rainbows
On the domes of deep sea-shells,
And make the necessary embrace of breeding
Beautiful also as fire,
Not even the weeds to multiply without blossom
Nor the birds without music:
There is the great humaneness at the heart of things,
The extravagant kindness, the fountain
Humanity can understand, and would flow likewise
If power and desire were perch-mates.

LOVED THIS POST - and where oh where do you find your poems? The Excesses of God was one I had not read, and I LOVE it!
I'm in total agreement with you on the abundance of the earth. And we live in a time that allows us the ability to spread that abundance, yet we are hampered by the evil politics of economy and wealth. We were just reading in the B of M last night (Alma chapter 1) about those who had so much and how they shared so that there were no sick or naked or hungry among them. If everyone would do that within their own neighborhoods and communities (and in this day and age we can also reach out to other countries as well) we would all have what we need and more.

Great post Cindy!

What an amazing picture (that I scalped I must admit) and a wonderful post. A lot of food for thought.
