In several scriptures the Lord warns choice people that Satan desires to sift them as wheat. What does that mean? Sift means to pass something through a sieve. Metaphorically, it means to "look carefully through" something.
While Satan probably desires to "look carefully through" the most valiant for some advantage, a more alarming intepretation is this: When wheat is ground to flour and then sifted, it isn't so much that pure flour than emerges from this process, but rather that total and complete control was surrendered to the miller so he could thoroughly emulsify and reduce the grain for his purpose.
