is for POETRY
Have you ever heard of Douglas Florian??!!
If you haven't already discovered him-let me be the one to introduce you to him!!
I think he's my most favorite childrens' poet. Move over Shel Silverstein!!
This man is clever and his own artist to boot.
That's about all the introduction he needs. I'm just going to share a few of my favorites.
You'll have the best results if you plop a young child on your lap first!!
ENJOY!!!
THE PRAYING MANTIS
Upon a twig
I sit and pray
For something big
To wend my way:
A caterpillar,
Moth,
Or bee-
I swallow them
Religiously.

THE WEEVILS
We are weevils.
We are evil.
We've aggrieved
Since time primeval.
With our down-curved
Beaks we bore.
Into crops
And trees we gore.
We are ruinous.
We are rotten.
We drill holes
In bolls of cotton.
We're not modern,
We're medieval.
We are weevils.
We are evil.

THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY
He is a monarch.
He is king.
He flies great migrations.
Past nations he wings.
He is a monarch.
He is a prince.
When blackbirds attack him,
From poison they wince.
He is a monarch.
He is a duke.
Swallows that swallow him
Frequently puke.

I'm going to have to look him up and find a book! Interesting words choices....like "frequently puke!" As you can see from my latest post, I'm on the search for some great children's books to fill my library...someday!!!
Chels, I already own two of his books! They can be 'grandma books" if you like. I have the animal ones. He has quite a few on all different subjects though.
Looks like another children's author I'm going to love.
Here's one of my favorite poets for kids - Jack Prelutsky. He is really funny and kids can really relate to his poetry.
Here's some picture book ideas for you - my kids love these books:
Of course a must have is "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type:
I also love "The Napping House" by Audrew Wood, "When the Wind Bears Go Dancing" by Phoebe Stone; "The Rainbabies", by Laura Krauss Melmed; "My Little Sister Ate One Hare", by Bill Grossman (this is really a funny one!).
A beautiful one with incredible art is "Sailing with the Wind" by Thomas Locker (he has a bunch of others I need to get). There is also a book that I read when I was a child, over and over, that my parents had. I absolutely am drawing a blank on it right now - but it's about two children who go to an island every summer with their parents. They scramble on the seashore and discover all sorts of wonderful things - then a storm comes and blows everything and changes it. It's a beautiful picture book of discovery at the oceanside and the artist is just absolutely amazing! If I think of it I'll let you know.
That's all for now - any ideas for me for children's books?
Those poems are so great, I love them! They are so funny and I'm not usually one for poetry. Children's poetry is fun though! I especially like the Monarch poem.
