Cable Mountain Hike

These ole feet have done it again!! They carried me through another 8 mile hike to the outreaches of Cable Mtn. in Zions National Park! I'm so grateful for my 10 little piggies, and my strong ankles and my able arches, that allow me, and even seem to relish the chance to hike a trail!
Once again we discovered that Zions NEVER fails to disappoint. The weather was absolutely perfect.(Is it really Nov. or could it still be Sept?) The yellows that autumn bring seemed to be at their peak. We shared the trail with....nobody! My hiking buds were the best- Nick and I convinced Bob to come along with us this time. Yea!!

The views...how do you describe, breathtaking?!! How do you describe what even film can't catch? You just have to be there. I was, and Im happy, happy, happy!!!

Besides the panoramic views and the thrill of getting away and into the out-of-doors, we happened to stumble upon something rather remarkable today. It was another one of those validations of the power of mother nature. Never mind for the moment, the incredible power of water, wind, rain and volcanic action, that it took to carve out this wondrous park; we happened to glance away from the trail, to discover a huge sliver of wood, puncturing the ground at an odd angle.

At first we felt sure that a hiker must have come along and stuck it into the soil. But, after more scrutiny, we noticed that there were splinters scattered all over the forest floor!!

So we investigated further, and found this huge Ponderosa Pine, that must have received quite a blow from a shaft of lightening!! And POW!! the tree rained down lumber in every direction!! With obvious force!!!

Can you imagine what it must have sounded like when it happened?!! ( when a tree blows up in the forest, does it make a sound?) I wonder if this magnificent tree can survive such a blast?
As one of my favorite song says so well, I hope and pray that I never loose my sense of wonder at this wonderful world in which we live. What a great day!!
