WITH THE STROKE OF A PEN

Zion National Park was born a hundred years ago this summer

By Lyman Hafen

A hundred years ago this summer President William Howard Taft was just getting his feet wet as chief executive of the United States. He’d gotten off to a rough start when his inauguration just a few months earlier had to be moved inside the Capitol to escape a blinding snow storm. Meanwhile, the immediate past president, Theodore Roosevelt, was off on safari in Africa, a trip underwritten by Scribner’s Magazine and the Smithsonian Institution. Robert Peary had just completed his epic journey to the North Pole, and Alice Huyler Ramsey, a 22-year-old housewife and mother from Hackensack, New Jersey, had just become the first woman to drive across the United States. With three female companions, none of whom could drive, she spent 59 days on the road in her Maxwell automobile traversing 3,800 miles from Manhattan to San Francisco. For many Americans it was probably not a summer to remember. But for those of us who hold a tender spot in our hearts for Zion National Park, it was a monumental time.

In his one term as president, Taft emphasized trust-busting, civil service reform, and strengthening the Interstate Commerce Commission. He pushed for the 16th Amendment, improved the performance of the postal service, and appointed six new justices to the Supreme Court. In the process, he managed to alienate enough of his key constituencies to assure his overwhelming defeat for a second term in the election of 1912. All in all, he was not a president much remembered a century later. And yet, for those of us who hold a tender spot in our hearts for Zion National Park, his presidency was monumental.

That’s because, on July 31, 1909, President William Howard Taft exercised his authority under the recently passed Antiquities Act. He signed an order declaring a place called Zion Canyon in southwestern Utah, Mukuntuweap National Monument. With the stroke of a pen he set aside for posterity the formidable towers of stone that stand sentinel above the Virgin River—the place we know and love today as Zion National Park. The monument’s original name “Mukuntuweap” was the name the canyon had been known by for centuries. According to a September 1872 report by Major John Wesley Powell, the Southern Paiute people who lived along the Pa’rus (the river now known as the Virgin) called the canyon Mukuntuweap, meaning “straight canyon.” There are other theories as to how to interpret the word Mukuntuweap, but regardless of what it means, it became the original name of the monument signed into law by President Taft.

During the years leading up to President Taft’s action, Americans had become more and more aware that such a place as Zion Canyon existed. The road to Zion was rough and few had actually seen the place, but an artist and writer named Frederick Dellenbaugh had opened many hearts and minds to the canyon’s grandeur with a series of paintings he exhibited in the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, and an article he published in Scribner’s Magazine in January of the same year. Indeed, the Scribner’s article introduced this “New Valley of Wonders,” to hundreds of thousands of Americans from sea to shining sea.

These and other efforts in the years leading up to 1909 played a crucial role in convincing the folks in Washington that a place called Zion Canyon was worth setting aside for posterity. For me, all it would have taken was one sentence from Frederick Dellenbaugh’s Scribner’s article. Upon confronting Zion’s great West Temple he wrote: “Niagara has the beauty of energy; the Grand Canyon, of immensity; the Yellowstone, of singularity; the Yosemite, of altitude; this Great Temple, of eternity…”

Note: Zion National Park Centennial events continue through 2009, with a special commemoration to be held July 31, celebrating President Taft’s monument proclamation. For more information go to: www.zionpark.org

Oh how I love my 'little' brother. Though I dont remember loving him so much when we sat in the back seat of the family car while taking trips together. Or when he thought every decent mother of a 18 month old should already have him potty trained. An opinion he held until he had children of his own I might add!! Or when he was always the favored son because he did so well in school. Though he rightly deserved that notoriety, for he worked harder at it than I.

Lets just say that I adore him now! And though he doesnt quite get to walk on water....he's darn close!! Most of the time!!
Love you tons my dear brother!!!
Have a VERY Happy Birthday!!!

WAKE UP AMERICA WEDNESDAY!!!

WE'VE FIGURED HIM OUT!
By Ben Stein

Why is President Barack Obama in such a hurry to get his socialized medicine bill passed?

Because he and his cunning circle realize some basic truths:

The American people in their unimaginable kindness and trust voted for a pig in a poke in 2008. They wanted so much to believe Barack Obama was somehow better and different from other ultra-leftists that they simply took him on faith.

They ignored his anti-white writings in his books. They ignored his quiet acceptance of hysterical anti-American diatribes by his minister, Jeremiah Wright.

They ignored his refusal to explain years at a time of his life as a student. They ignored his ultra-left record as a "community organizer," Illinois state legislator, and Senator.

The American people ignored his total zero of an academic record as a student and teacher, his complete lack of scholarship when he was being touted as a scholar.

Now, the American people are starting to wake up to the truth. Barack Obama is a super likeable super leftist, not a fan of this country, way, way too cozy with the terrorist leaders in the Middle East, way beyond naïveté, all the way into active destruction of our interests and our allies and our future.

The American people have already awakened to the truth that the stimulus bill -- a great idea in theory -- was really an immense bribe to Democrat interest groups, and in no way an effort to help all Americans.

Now, Americans are waking up to the truth that ObamaCare basically means that every time you are sick or injured, you will have a clerk from the Department of Motor Vehicles telling your doctor what he can and cannot do.

The American people already know that Mr. Obama's plan to lower health costs while expanding coverage and bureaucracy is a myth, a promise of something that never was and never will be -- a bureaucracy lowering costs in a free society. Either the costs go up or the free society goes away.

These are perilous times. Mrs. Hillary Clinton, our Secretary of State, has given Iran the go-ahead to have nuclear weapons, an unqualified betrayal of the nation. Now, we face a devastating loss of freedom at home in health care. It will be joined by controls on our lives to "protect us" from global warming, itself largely a fraud if believed to be caused by man.

Mr. Obama knows Americans are getting wise and will stop him if he delays at all in taking away our freedoms.

There is his urgency and our opportunity. Once freedom is lost, America is lost. Wake up, beloved America.

Do You Sigh at Beauty?

Whether it be a day like yesterday-when hiking through Cedar Breaks enjoying the cool air and the wildflowers and the company of good friends.
sigh....

Or Sunday, when my handsome son and foxy Builder were both sitting at the sacrament table fulfilling their sacred responsibilities, together...
sigh....

Or the day before that, when the impressive, massive, imposing, sumptuous thunderheads rolled in and shared their rain and lightening with us!!!
sigh...

Or..a few days before that, when Brian shared with us his 600+ photos of magnificent Alaska, a trip which he gratefully shared with his grandparents.
sigh...

Or..how about when I had the unique opportunity of witnessing two rather large rattlesnakes weave and dance and entangle themselves with each other in some sort of mating frolic.
eeeww...sigh....

Or...how about seeing Doobie back where he/she belongs, chowing down on crunchy snow peas.
sigh...

Or...there is always the beautiful grandbaby boys who finally returned home, with their dimples, brown eyes, blue eyes, giggles and sweet chubbyness.
sigh...

Or...how about the grandeur of Pine Mountain, just 30 minutes from here, with its massive pine trees, its small streams and the good people we shared it with.
sigh....

So I guess I'd have to to say YES, I do still sigh at beauty!!

Another birthday is rolling around again. Whipping around is more like it really!!!
How does a whole year go by so quickly? ( I remember when summers seemed plenty long enough...Those days are LONG gone!!)
I dont have a whole lot to show for the last 365 days, but my dear MIL sure does!!
I think she'd agree that its been a memorable year for her!!
-Via her 7 lovely children she can boost about her 29 amazing grandchildren...who in turn have produced 18 amazing great grandchildren!! (not including the ones in the oven)
-Shes had a mighty impressive come back from some nasty broken bones as well!!!
-And now she's a par excellence care giver to her eternal companion who now brandishes a brand-new titanium hip!!

May this next year be not quite so dramatic--but still full of adventure, love and goodness.

I'd like to ramble further with my thoughts on miracles.
Those that know me, know that I love a good sci-fi story, movie or idea. I love the idea of the unlimited possibilities these stories imply. I do enjoy listening to George Nory late at night as he visits with listeners about extra-terrestrial encounters and their ghost stories. I take them in with a grain of salt. Im not a gullible soul, I dont think, but I love to ponder the possibilities.
So having said that, on this Sabbath day I'd like to equate miracles with the plan of our loving Heavenly Father.
First- lets consider the miracle of the creation of this glorious earth on which we dwell. And of the creation of all things that we share on this planet here.
Second- consider the miracle of our own lives.
Now consider if you will these verses of scripture:
Man was also in the beginning with God. Intelligence, or the light of truth, was not created or made, neither indeed can be.
All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, to act for itself, as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence.
For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and elements, inseparably connected, receive a fullness of joy; And when separated, man cannot receive a fullness of joy.
The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth.

One of the things that I can take from these verses is that there are two 'building blocks' in our universe. 1. there is intelligence. And there always has been intelligence. 2. there is matter. And there always has been matter.
Next, I learned that intelligence acts; and matter is to be acted upon.
And when intelligence and matter are united... they become something extraordinary. Agency is exercised and they in turn can become organized with other extraordinary intelligence/matter to become atoms...and from atoms comes EVERYTHING else!! Rocks, water, gases, plants, all forms of life, stars and dare I suggest...spirits too!!!!?
I read the other day that Brigham Young taught that all things are free to act for themselves-which include even the basic elements. (please note here that this theorizing is coming from a fairly simple mind ...my simple mind!!)
We all have come to this earth with an innate understanding that a perfect God would never force anything to obey Him, but He can invite all things to join Him. For those that join Him, He expands their opportunities and knowledge to do what they may in joining Him in the pursuit if joy and growth.
Another interesting thought: God is all-powerful because things choose to obey/join and honor Him. To win obedience in all things God must be honorable in every way-so that all of creation will follow Him. We obey what we honor...isnt that right???
Sooo....back to my love of science fiction and my acknowledgment of real miracles. Maybe miracles could otherwise be known as God-sciences, as Paul Skousen calls it. God-science in action.
Think of the miracles of Jesus:
water to wine
blindness to sight
death to life
all of these 'cases' exemplify molecules in action. Here we have atoms returning to normal function. Could none of these miracles have happened if the intelligence in matter didnt choose to join/obey God?
Interesting, eh??
I've enjoyed reading about quantum theory. I find it all so fascinating, though I admit that I dont understand an 1/8th of what Im reading. What I do understand rings true to me. Just like hearing the Gospel rings a perfect tone through me.
And in reading an essay by Christopher Cokinos I found a perfect example on thoughts about this universe we orbit through and live in, and all its unknowns and possibilities. He writes,

"I cant show anyone most of the universe because most of the universe falls into the category of the hidden. I mean, the really, really hidden. Most of the universe is, as many people know, composed of dark matter, (23 percent) and dark energy (73 percent). What we typically perceive through our senses and our technology is only 4 percent of the universe. This 4 percent-yet another splendid fraction- is made up of baryonic matter, that is, atoms of 'ordinary' stuff. And we dont even know what dark matter and dark energy are. We see their effects but we dont know them at all. And this universe we're in, what ever it is, may be only one in a infinity of the multiverse, just one universe among the uncounted and the uncountable."

Extraordinary!!!
Miraculous!!!

MIRACLES!!

I dont think Im stretching the truth or exaggerating too much when I say that small miracles are happening every day. This morning the phone rang, and it was our dear neighbors calling to invite us over to their backyard to have a look at something they found there. He was a little clandestine, and secretive and playful all at the same time. But our neighbors are fun and delightful people who always have good things going on...so I slipped on my blue jeans and flip flops and walked across the street with my Builder, wondering what it might be about?
When we got there he pointed to an area in his back yard, and with a twinkle in his eye asked, "Does that belong to you?" I looked across their beautiful english style garden in the making, and there was Doobie, strolling down a path!! Yes, thats right!! That old tortoise of ours had somehow made its way across the street, and up a curb, and has spent the last week in their back yard!! Miracle I say-miracle!!!
Im so very grateful and happy that Doobie is back!!
Thank you good neighbors, for your watchful eyes!!!

one runs his eyes down its pages, its

Do I dare tell my Builder about this one? He's quite patient with my movie addiction and the love affair I have with NETFLIX...can I possibly push him further and have books coming to the mailbox too??!! I think it sounds like a GREAT idea!! I am more often than not, very frustrated and unhappy with the selection and availability of books at our local library, so Im thinking that this may be the answer. Plus....NO LATE FEES!!! What do you think???
I have been missing our book club and the great ladies who were part of the mix...I miss the new ideas for books and the visiting and the sharing of mommy woes and grandmother delights, I miss the food and the commonality we all shared as women. But lately I've been longing for the excitement of a really good read. Its been a long, long, time!!
Check out BOOKSWIM and let me know if you think its a good idea.

Heres a mystery for you-
I know Im not the only one to encounter someone on a hiking trail or to pass someone in a store and flash a friendly smile and in return get only a blank cold stare.
Have you seen people behave this way?
It cant be just my non-dis script face that wont motivate a smile. I've seen it happen to other friendly, non-suspecting, kind people. Are these down-cast, stone faced people afraid, or angry, or so self-centered that they just cant be bothered sharing a friendly smile?! How sad for them.
Why would a harried 'worker-bee' behind the counter at the post office make a grateful comment about my smiling face being a rare occurrence? Why is this so? We all know that lines and delays at the post office are inevitable. We know this before we even leave the comforts of our own homes. Its not the worker-bees fault. Remember government ineptitude?!! Nothing more. Its not the people; not usually. They seem to do the best they can with what they've been dealt. (excuse that little digression please)
Why has a smile become the exception and not the rule!!!???
We have all heard that it takes more muscles to frown than it does to smile.
I personally have taken on the credo to brighten my very small corner of the world. I never want to be the cause in making someones day a little worse because I couldnt bring myself to share a friendly smile. Smiling really is a very simple thing- That my simple mind can handle.
We all should give it more of a try. It can become a natural reaction when meeting another along the paths of life. Even sweet Zoey is quick to smile. (wish I could capture a picture of it!!)
I say lets spread a little cheer where we may-life just naturally deals us more gloom than we need.
Remember: Men are that we might have joy!!

So Im enjoying my new 'pet' project. The intention being that a certain Doobie is happy here. Frivolous though it may seem, I'm enjoying making another corner of the yard a little brighter. Doobie deserves an appealing abode.
Bri and I staked out the perfect corner before he/she even arrived. (can I just say how vexatious it is not to know the gender of this critter!!! It becomes so tedious to write about.) The corner needed some sprucing up.
Remember this first photo of the corner???

Now there's a beautiful and tasty hibiscus growing there. And I planted some clover seeds which should be sprouting soon.

Next:
I'd like to plant some clump grass that can be nibbled and have Bri build me a turtle house before winter hits. (yes, winter will return and take away these 112 degree days)

Also: The Builder and I need to figure out some kind of make-shift green house setup, so that I can grow squash plants-for their blooms, and ice plant and other yummy tortoise treats all through the winter. Any ideas?? Who knew a reptile would motivate so???

TODAYS PHOTO

Look who came hiking with us at Fitness Ridge!!! It was so fun to share the trail with Sharon, bright and early this morning. She was able to see first hand why I love my job so much!! Shes a trooper!!! I hope she'll join me again sometime!!!

There was less hiking this week. I took some days off. I've missed it in a way-but I've enjoyed a little extra sleep in the mornings. 1-2 hrs makes a whole lot of difference. I've been able to listen to Art Bell on the radio, two nights in a row!! Ewww...I love a good extra-terrestrial ghost story late at night!!

Our delightful visitors from Arizona have been fun; Because surgery on an old, worn-out hip went well!!

The 3rd time is a charm with the new STAR TREK movie!! Its practically a perfect film!!

Activities work is back on line at church. We're planning a 24th of July picnic up in the mountains!! Where its cooler!!

FINALLY!!! Good news for dear cousin Lynley!! There's been an email notification that shes been 'unofficially' accepted to grad school at U.S.U.!!! Logan, here she comes!!!!

Doobie the Tortoise loves to eat!! He/She loves to gobble up squash blooms, honeysuckle flowers, and spinach, chard and ice plant!! Grape leaves are a favorite too.

Lachlan and Logan love grandmas and grandpa's swimming pool. (so do their parents.)

Rob hates waiting. He hates the unknown. He has my lack of patience.

The Builder loves to mow and keep his lawn. The green stuff is a sourse of pride and joy and satisfaction for him.

I didnt eat pizza all week!!

Acne stinks!!! It leaves me feeling powerless and frustrated. I can only imagine how Bri-dog feels!! Isnt there something out there that really works!!! Beside the dreaded, awful Acutaine!!!

I basked in the glow of Annas delight at being in college and in dating and studying up a storm.

Sister missionaries are the best!!! (the boys arent bad either) We had two of them speak to us in church on Sunday!! The gospel is true!!

I went for more than a week not realizing that the air conditioning doesnt work at the sleeping end of the house. Doesn't bother me!! I prefer a fan over the freon cooled air!!

Im priming my Builder for a road trip in a couple of weeks. Going north for a visit and a stint at Lagoon is in the cards!!!

Im enjoying thinking about Bri-dog in Alaska. He must be having a marvelous time.

Does this photo remind you of anyone?
I know that if my sweet mother-in-law could figure out how to make a comment, she'd be the first one up saying that this could be a pic of our sweet and dosey Joe!! That boy of ours could sleep anywhere!! And he did!! On top of bookcases, flopped over footstools, under beds, and on the bottom stair!! What a guy!! He always makes us smile, just like this photo does...found at Awkward Family Photos.

So Brian headed out this morning, with my folks to the wilds of Alaska!!! Man was he excited!! (man oh man am I jealous!) Their destination is Juneau, where they'll get on a fancy cruise liner tomorrow and cruise the inlets and bays of that rugged, glorious country.
There are a few things I know Brain is looking forward to doing while he visits-
food, food and more food. Cooler, possibly downright cold weather. Taking lots of pictures. He took his sketchbooks too...inspiration for great art!!! Whale watching. Hopefully some fishing. Maybe a helicopter ride over a glacier? One on one time with the ever generous grandparents. Possibly some job hunting for the future?
Any way you look at it...HES GOING TO HAVE A MARVELOUS, MEMORABLE TIME!!
I guess we''ll see him in 10 days!!!

And if you'll allow me to digress a little....
On the way back from Vegas this morning, we stopped at the incredibly busy MickeyD's in Mesquite, and grabbed a bit of breakfast. I just have to say that the 'master chiefs' in the back kitchens at headquarters are genius!!! I had my first taste of a McGriddle Sausage sandwich(I dont do eggs)...and it was divine!! yes sir reee....Divine!!! (Sssshhh....Dont tell Anna and have her ruin it for me. I dont want to know whats in it!!! ) GENIUS I say!!!

I read this talk this week. It has stayed with me.
My blog is floundering right now, due mostly to my floundering with the change of course my empty, quiet, boring life has become. Im feeling very sorry for myself- which is ridiculous!! Im feeling my blog- ie. my life needs new direction. I need to fill every corner of my life with richer, fuller experiences. In a way, thats what I've always been attempting to accomplish. I so enjoy sharing what I've learned in watching movies, reading books, meeting new people, and living life!!
A quote from the article;
"There are those who always speak of themselves; they are either insecure or proud. There are those who always speak of others; they are usually boring. There are those who speak of stirring ideas, compelling books and inspiring doctrine; these are the few who make their mark in this world."
I dont seek agrandizement, and I strive not to bore, though I know I do at times. All I seek to do is inspire and share with loved ones what I've learned and am learning. This school of life is an interesting one!! It brings so much joy. We are constantly bombarded with bad, troubling, sometimes sickening news...all the time!!! There isnt an equal part of 'good news' to be shared with each other. This has been my attempt- to choose the better part of what this glorious earth experience gives us, and share it with you!
As I continue to gather coral dust between my aging toes, I may have some new goals for the blog.
I will-
*take time to write more thought provoking, inspiring posts. Which means honing my skills with greater effort.
*surround myself with better books and inspiring music. (Brigham Young had an interesting thought on music: "There is no music in hell, for all good music belongs in heaven." It would be punishment enough to go to hell and not hear a note of music for all eternity.) interesting.......
* find the happy medium between 'caring for my physical appearence' and CARING too much for my physcial appearence. This may appear to be a very random goal that doesnt belong with the others, but I have learned from reading this article that being 'sloppy and casual' can be a real detractor to greater spiritual well-being.again... interesting.... (you can read about Elder Callister's encounter with Audrey Hepburn in the above link)

I will close these "Sunday thoughts" with the same quote that finishes out the article-
"Let us ...show to the world tht we have talent and taste, and prove to the heavens that our minds are set on beauty and true excellence, so that we can become worthy to enjoy the society of angels." -Brigham Young

I have another recommendation.
But let me say up front, that Im so glad I read the book first. Not because the movie butchered the book, but because it prepared me for the tale.
This is a faithful retelling of Boyne's novel.
ITs a bittersweet and haunting story centered in the Holocaust. It may not be perfect, but it will leave you moved and thinking.
Its a ideal book or movie to lead into discussions on a whole variety of topics.

I'd like you to meet DOOBIE!
We are now the proud owners of a juvenile African Tortoise. He/She is 2 years old.

Becoming the caregiver of a tortoise has been #43 on my list of things to do before I die! ( flying in an F16 is #3) Owning a tortoise seems like a very reasonable desire dont ya think?? I think its gunna be groovy having him/her as part of the family.

I've enjoyed doing some research about this gentle reptile.

The greatest difficulty thus far is not knowing what to call it...is it a HE or SHE??? We just wont know what it is until its about 8 yrs old!!!

This little guy is a FAST grower and a FAST mover. He/she can easily be grow to the impressive weight of 100-200 lbs!! He can also slip from our sight in no time, if we look away. Hes a speedy critter and an escape artist!!

According to the statics, we will probably have to amend the will as well. He/she will outlive us all s0 one of the grandkids will need to inherit him. She/he could easily live to be 100 yrs old.

This guy is strictly vegan, so lunch meat and burgers and bugs are not included in his diet. He's a grazer and eats grasses, flowers and veggies; with fruit being only a rare treat.

She/he wont be hibernating in the winter. So we'll have to keep him warm when it gets cold outside...just like me!!!

"L" thinks he's the bomb!!!

SUNDAY SCRIBBLINGS

"Why, in this," she replied, "when we were rich, my
husband and I had so many cares that we had no time
to talk to one another, or to think of our souls, or
to pray to God...we had visitors, and had to consider
what food to set before them, and what presents to
give them, lest they should speak ill of us. When they
left we had to look after our laborers, who were always
trying to shirk work and get the best food, while we
wanted to get all we could out of them. So we sinned.
Then we were in fear lest a wolf should kill a foal or a
calf, or thieves steal our horses. We lay awake at night
worring lest the ewes should overlie their lambs, and we
got up again and again to see that all was well. One thing
attended to, another care would spring up...And besides
that, my old man and I used to disagree. He would say we
must do so and so, and I would differ fromm him; and then
we disputed--sinning again. So we passed from one trouble
to another; from one sin to another, and found no happiness."

I LOVED this little birth announcement that my Builder just whipped up all those years ago...to tell our friends and family that we had a little girl to love and cherish!! (we were growing hydroponic lettuce in a commercial greenhouse while living in So. Oregon ...thus the 'seedling' pun.)
Angelic girls are a gift and a blessing!!
These two always have been!!

Now just look at her!! My heart swells with joy and gratitude for this sweet blessing in our lives. May you find all the happiness and fulfillment that you so richly deserve my love!
Happy, Happy Birthday!!! (We wish we could be there to eat cake and party!!!!...dont you think Chili's Restaurant would be fun???)
