Stephenson Family Ties The Barn Burnt Down
And Now I See The Moon
Jean brought in the tulips and daffodils
by the armload and for the first time in
her life was amazed by them. How had she
missed them all these years, she wondered,
their colours, the clinging, yearning scent,
the slippery sap and the stamens, so
unbearably naked and tuned to the air that
it was impossible to believe they were not
receiving some strain of music too fine for
human ears.

The book-Fish Out of Water is probably one of my most vivid memories of a 'read aloud book' from my childhood. I loved that book. I own a copy of my own now. Im not sure what it was about the book that made such a lasting impression....was it the gigantic gold fish that needed a swimming pool to contain its magnificence?? Or was it just the idea of a HUGE goldfish with its endearing goldfish lips??? Who knows.
But...truth be told, nothing, no NOTHING can be as endearing as our little Logan, as we watch him grow!!

My grandfather's barn is sweet-smelling

Leather harnesses hang like paintings against

But the barn is the Place he loves most.
Where else, he says, can the soft sound of
cows chewing make all the difference in the world?

Today we get to participate in the dedication of another beautiful temple. THis one being in our own backyard...ie. the Salt Lake Valley!!
How blessed we are to have a prophet that feels so strongly that we need MORe "safe havens" where we can find refuge from the storms of life.

Elder John A. Widtsoe said. " Men grow mighty under the results of temple service; women grow strong under it; the community increases in power; until the [adversary] has less influence than he ever had before."
Temples are blessing to our personal lives and to the community that has one within its limits. Thats what I think.

Its NOT about the uniform-- we had to borrow this one!!
ITs NOT about the merit badges--though he did enjoy achieving some of them.
It WASNT about me, his mom--I was really no help at all!! He did this!! (with some help from his dad)
-you know the old adage-"Mom earned this one." NOT ME!!
It WASNT about fabulous scout leaders--Im quite sure that there had to be a few. But in the end, it WAS about a good friend and new scout chairman, that took the reins and made things happen. THanks ever so much Sue!!!
It WASNT about sibling pressure--Bri is our very first Eagle Scout!!

So What Was it About???
In a way Im really not sure.
But I do know that Bri-dog isnt afraid of doing hard things. He doenst mind a challenge.
I know that campouts were the highlight of the scouting program for him.
I know that he's enjoying a sense of satisfaction in being the first and only one in the family to achieve such a noble award.
I know that he 'gets it', and that an Eagle award is a very good thing to have on a resume!
I know that good friends and family were encouraging and that he didnt mind a little bit of friendly peer pressure. (thanks Blake and co.)
I know he gets a sense of satisfaction in a job well done--just like his dad.

So... my hearty congratulations go out to our Brian!!! Well done thou good and faithful son!!!
What I Know:
Bri is now in control of his future!!
It looks bright to me!!!

Bri-Dogs Birthday!!!

What is it about teenage boys??
One thing I know for sure, they're WAY past being compared to puppy dog tails!!
But wait....I feel a comparison to dogs coming on...........
How about the love of sleeping.....
And the love of eating....wont they eat just about anything you put before them, and a LOT of it!?
They are loyal!!
I know there's joy in chasing after noisy, shiny vehicles....vrooomm, vrooooommmmmmm
They fart and grunt and sleep some more.
They chase balls with a passion.......basketballs anyway.
Ours is full of unconditional love!
They're hairy.
When they're raised from a pup, you'll love them forever no matter how naughty they may sometimes be.
Their bark is usually far worse than their bite.
Their eyes can tell the story.
Being eager to please is another favorite quality.
Often they behave younger than their years. duh!!!
When left unattended they can get into mischief.
Dog breath/morning breath-lets just leave it at that.
What I Know:
The life of dog and boy child is a good one.
Our Bri-dog is a creative, ingenuitive young man. How grateful I am that I can call him son!! May his 18th year be one of his best!!
I love him like crazy!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN!!!

Jolly St. Patrick's Day To Ya!!!

I know a place where the sun is like
gold,
And the cherry blooms burst with
snow;
And down underneath is the loveliest
nook,
Where the four-leaf clover grow.

One leaf is for hope, and one for faith,
And one is for love, you know;
But God put the another in for luck-
If you search, you will find where
they grow.

But you must have hope, and you must
have faith;
You must love and be strong; and so,
you work, if you wait, you will find
the place
Where four-leaf clovers grow.

SUNDAY MUSING

I, Nephi, having been born of goodly
parents, therefore I was taught some-
what in all the learning of my father;
and having seen many afflictions in the
course of my days, nevertheless, having
been highly favored of the Lord in all
my days; yea, having had a great knowledge
of the goodness and the mysteries of God,
therefore I make a record of my proceedings
in my days.
from: Book of Mormon
1Nephi 1:1

If you’re not LDS or ‘mormon’ then you probably have not had the pleasure -yet- to become acquainted with someone called Nephi. You also may or may not know why we are sometimes called Mormon. (though we preferred being called Latter-day Saints) Mormon was an ancient prophet who recorded revelation and history, that is now part of our sacred scripture , in conjunction with the Holy Bible.
Mormon was also an abridger of the sacred records.

But.. we could just have easily been ‘tagged’ the Nephis’ or Nephites I suppose.
But I stray from topic.
I have put together a refresher course--good for Mormons and non- Mormons alike.
is for “I, Nephi…..”

Nephi is well worth becoming acquainted with. He’s well worth knowing a little bit about. He was a remarkable man.
The best place to begin this review would be in age old scripture.
In the Book of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah-a prophet from the Old Testament and Lehi (Nephi’s father) were compatriots, and contemporaries. . These men were chosen by God to preach repentance and doomsday warnings to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. At this time--600 B.C. -- Jerusalem had fallen into a wicked and abominable state. Nebuchadnezzar had appointed Zedekiah to be ruler in Jerusalem. Prophets were being murdered. The prophet Jeremiah had compiled lists of wicked practices that the people were committing at the time. (see Jeremiah 2,3,4,5, 16 and 23)
It was at this same time that the wealthy merchant, Lehi -who had the welfare of the people of Jerusalem weighing heavily on his heart and mind, plead with the Lord to spare them all from destruction. (Lehi had been LISTENING to the prophets!!)
"For it came to pass in the commencement of the first year of the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah....there came many prophets, prophesying unto the people that they must repent, or the great city Jerusalem must be destroyed."
Lehi had a family. Nephi must have been born sometime around 616 B.C. He had three older brothers. Laman, Lemuel, and Sam.
Lehi, felt it his highest duty, as a descendant of Joseph who was sold into Egypt, to provide his family with the best of educations!! Nephi benefited greatly from this education.
Here is an attempt to a quick overview of a extraordinary man:

Nephi was a student of Hebrew and Egyptian.
Nephi proved to be a remarkable craftsman. He was able to work metal and wood. Making tools and brass pages to write upon, and constructed a boat to sail upon the ocean. He could hunt, and hunt well it seems-due to the fact that his older brothers looked to him to find food in times of crisis. He also had skill in the mining of ore that was needed for the making of metal tools.

Nephi brushed over lightly the fact that he endured many afflictions as he grew into manhood and beyond. Could 4 murderous attempts on his life by his very own brothers fall under this heading?? And lets not forget that a powerful, wicked general attempted to kill him as well! Poor Laban-lost this skirmish at the hands of an obedient boy prophet.
Nephi was a liberator, as he set Zoram, a slave, free from the servitude of Laban.
Nephi became a desert nomad and a survivalist. And without too much of a stretch of the imagination, he was most definitely an explorer and a captain on the high seas.
He became a colonizer in a new world, with only 59-70 people, some of which VERY reluctantly looked to him as a leader or advisor.
He was a pioneer, as he struggled to set up a new civilization for his family.
Of course Nephi was the spiritual leader and teacher for his people as well.
He was a warrior-defending himself and later, having to defend his little colony from rebellious, proud family members that would rather see him dead!! (he was delivered from his enemies by Divine intervention on more than one occasion.)
So…indeed Nephi’s afflictions were many, to be sure!!!
Be he endured, and always acknowledged his many blessing and from where those blessings came.
He, like his father, was a visionary man. He received direct revelation from God! He was given views of the ’big picture’ and all that God has in store for us.
Nephi was ’large in stature’ or in other words, as strong as an ox and could take care of himself.
He held the Holy Priesthood and became a restorer of the Church of Jesus Christ on the western hemisphere. He was a temple builder, and a city builder with expertise in engineering and architecture.
He was a war strategist and a great soldier. His people wanted him as their King (which he wisely declined.)
How grateful we are that Nephi was a most excellent recorded keeper and doer of the commandments of God. For we enjoy marvelous scripture because of his work.

What I Know:
Because a rich city boy, who sought after all that was good and righteous in the world, and was quite willing to sacrifice all that he had in order to follow the commands of a loving, all knowing Father in Heaven, we have a record of an ancient people whose history we can learn so very much from and also be guaranteed an experience with the Spirit touching our hearts and minds as we read this record.
What Else I Know:
Nephi should be every good ‘Mormons’ HERO!! He’s fast becoming mine. In this time of loser sports guys, and recording artist, we all need Nephi front and center in our minds!!!

GO UTAH!!!
As the years go by, we are all of us more
or less subject to two dangers, the danger
of petrifaction and the danger of putrefaction;
either that we shall become hard and callous,
crusted over with customs and conventions till
no new ray of light or of joy can reach us, or
that we shall become lax and disorganized, losing
our grip upon the real and vital sources of happiness
and power. Now, there is no perservative and antiseptic,
nothing that keeps one's heart young, like love, like
sympathy, like giving one's self with enthusiasm to
some worthy thing or cause.

I owe my daughter an apology.
I probably owe a lot of people an apology.
My sweet middle child has been valiantly resisting my pleading and cajoling to watch a favorite movie of mine. Momma Mia!! When I first saw this movie in the theater, I found myself longing to have my favorite daughter with me to watch this feast of ???
Finally I thought the moment was right and persuaded her to view it with me. She succumbed to my pressure. And….she didn’t like it very much. Now Im feeling some mommy guilt. So this is why Im apologizing!! For having nudged her a little bit more into the world that she has been so courageously resisting. Duh mom!! I blew it by persuading her to enjoy something that her twisted mother should enjoy on her own. I should be through encouraging others to enjoy the same things that I do. I have a streak of reckless abandon running through my veins. I enjoy some foolhardiness in life. So I will apologize, but I cant promise reformation!! I am who I am, and I don’t want to change too much.
I am surprised at how this movie moves me, but then again, I probably shouldn’t be too amazed. This movie has a perfect combination of essential elements to stir me. Whats not to love!!!??? It has Abba Music, and uninhibited dancing. It has women with moxie and sapphire seas and bougainvillea vines growing from every abutment!! It’s the Greek Isles for heaven sake!! The movie has outrageous disco costumes, (I know what Im going to be next Halloween!) and vivid ,luxurious textiles (if I had sheets and linens like those, then maybe I’d LOVE to do laundry!!) And last, but not least, it has vulnerable men who sing when they really shouldnt, and it makes it all the more appealing!! (the ONLY thing missing from this movie…??? Men wearing starched white Victorian ruffles at their necks . You know what I mean ladies!!)
What I Know:
My mistake- swaying others, especially refined daughters, to the ‘brash side’ of my mind. But…I hope I never stop dancing in the bleachers at sporting events. (sorry Bri)

Whose Daylight Are We Saving???

Unless it is cured sometimes greediness grows.

It’s a conspiracy!!
Spring forward????
I don’t think so!!!
Instead it feels like an act of resistance by the powers that be.
Who’s brilliant idea was it anyway???
My guess is that it had something to do with greed. Business men conspired to lengthen the day so that we could have more time to spend money that we may not have, on ventures that arent really important.
It also seems like yet another way to gradually get to feel’in like springtime, with all its glory, is just around the corner, and then have the rug jerked out from under me. If you’re a morning person, like myself, that first morning after mess’in with the hands of the clock, felt like I was being told that spring needed to go back to bed, and that the extra blankets on the bed were there to stay a while longer. “The trick’s on me!!!“ When my freezing limbs begin to feel like there's a thaw in their future…they don’t appreciate it when the suns appearance is yet again delayed.
Its disheartening.
Do we really want more sunlight in the evening-where it becomes next to impossible to get kids to bed, or do we want sunlight in the morning, welcoming us to a brand new warm, glorious day??!!
Why are we mess’in with Mother Nature!!??
Thing go aray when we mess with Her!!
Did anyone else hear the news report the other day about the perplexing increase in heart attacks that occur just after the changing of the clocks? Nobody knows WhY this seems to happen, but it does. Have you personally met ANYONE who enjoys the concept of time change?
WHAT I KNOW:
I have an insatiable need for warm morning sun-NOT for more time at the mall or on a baseball diamond. My vote is for leaving the clock alone!!
Resistance may be futile, but I wont be assimilated easily.

Victory

(can I just say once again how very proud I am of my brother!! Enjoy another read written by him!!)
The other day the University of Utah basketball team won another close game. The win started me thinking about why some teams consistently win the close games and others loose them. What are the ‘things’ that lead to victory?

Of course, I’m interested in more than the Utah basketball team. The elements that make up victory in important endeavors are worth understanding. There is a subtle (and sometimes, not so subtle) idea in the world that contends victory is not important. Sometimes you hear, ‘…it is not if you win or loose, but how you play the game.’ Reducing of the importance of victory is a mistake. If you are engaged in a contest, no matter the field, victory matters…that is why it is a contest…to determine the victor. If you are not engaged in a contest, then victory is not a factor.

If the work you do is service, there are, by definition, no winners or losers…just winners .

What I’ve learned:

Preparation

Victory requires preparation. The better prepared, the greater the chances of victory. Teams that consistently win close games are prepared to win close games. They prepare by getting in shape, practicing together, learning plays and developing an attitude of winning. However all practice is not the same. Practice (or preparation) must be focused on the actions that lead to winning. There are many examples where hard practice and long hours of preparation do not lead to victory. This is where good leadership and coaching are vitally critical – focusing the preparation efforts on the things that matter.

In combat, the ultimate contest, preparation is critical. The size of the forces, the strategic and tactical decisions, the number of men, the economic might of the opponents and the quality of intelligence are all factors in victory. Numerous studies and books endlessly debate what it is that matters in all the various types of combat – what leads to victory. One item often left out is the preparation required. Smaller armies or navies beat larger opponents when they are better prepared. Typically the military calls preparation, ‘training.’ However, just like in sports, combat preparation includes getting in shape, practicing together, learning plays (called plans) and developing an attitude and goal of winning.

Perseverance

In April 2008, Captain Kyle Walton was in Afghanistan with the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group. He was on a mission in the Shok Valley surrounded by rugged mountains in an area that Taliban and Al’Qaeda insurgents had controlled since the beginning of the war. This was an ‘away game’ and the 3rd Special Forces Group walked into an ambush.

The team was outnumbered and out-positioned. They were receiving fire from all directions and most of the team had been hit, many had been hit several times. Injured soldiers were treating other injured soldiers who were continuing to fire back at the enemy. One man’s leg was shot off and he put on his own tourniquet to stop the bleeding. A 60 foot cliff was the only way out and it appeared ‘obvious’ that they were going to be overrun. But instead, they persevered. They never gave up, and they continued to shoot and coordinate air attacks while they found a way down the cliff. Their survival, and victory (the valley is no longer a safe haven for the enemy), is mainly due to their perseverance. In the heat of battle, literally, sticking it out against all odds is often the key to victory.

Of course, significant preparation occurred before they went to this away game – and that was a factor also. They were in shape, had practiced together, had a plan (which included contingency plans in case they got in trouble) and they had all spent a career developing an attitude of winning.

"This is the story about Americans fighting side-by-side with their Afghan counterparts (and) refusing to quit." -- Captain Kyle Walton.
As a naval officer I’d be remiss to not share another classic example of perseverance shown by John Paul Jones in 1779 during the Revolutionary War. On September 23, 1779, Jones was commanding the Bonhomme Richard off the coast of Scotland and fought one of the bloodiest engagements in naval history up to that point. Jones struggled with the much larger Royal Navy frigate Serapis, and although his own vessel was burning and sinking, Jones would not accept the British demand for surrender, replying, “I have not yet begun to fight.” More than three hours later, Serapis surrendered and Jones took command.
Priority

In most contests, victory goes to the individual or team where victory is the greater priority. In a close contest, it is safe to say that both contestants are prepared and not giving up. What is the intangible that causes some to consistently win the close contests and others loose them? At this point it is the “will to win.” Sometimes the phrase ‘who wants it more’ is used.

Some contests, like sports, have rules within which the contest is played. Good coaching develops the will to win, but not at any cost, because, after all it is only a game. Good coaching teaches that winning is a priority – but not at the expense of values or sportsmanship.

Combat is (or should be) different. In a life-and-death struggle rules and limits must be judiciously applied. Too many rules on combatants mean that the desire to win is not the number one priority – something else is – maybe being a ‘good’ guy, or not offending someone else. The problem with that is that if you erode the priority of winning, then the chance of winning is reduced.

A Navy SEAL once told me, sort of facetiously, ‘If you are not cheating, you are not trying.’ His implication was that winning may mean breaking rules, and in combat that should be considered. You can be sure that the ‘enemy’ will consider breaking the rules – every loosing army claims that the enemy didn’t play by the rules.

I keep the below photo on my computer desktop. It was taken in Fallujah, Iraq in November 2004. This Marine Sergeant was leading his Marines in the clearing of buildings of enemy insurgents. The enemy was fighting back viciously and stubbornly. It was a close game.

In one of the rooms, some Marines were ambushed by an insurgent who had buried himself below the home under a concrete floor with a machine gun firing armor piercing bullets. He would fire up thru the concrete floor and the Marines couldn’t figure out where the bullets were coming from. Several were wounded and the Sergeant went in to rescue his men. He saved his men, and was wounded in the process. This shot was taken as some of his guys pulled him the rest of the way out. G is for Grandparenting!! or Grandchildren

"You've gotta do your own growing,
no matter how tall your grandfather was."
-Irish Proverb

Did anyone notice that I skipped the letter "G"?
It was intentional.
Because "G" is for grandparenting, or grandkids, and because I was asked to hit the mute button for a while, before spreading the good news of another child joining the fam...so I skipped "G".
Now shouting from the rooftops is permitted, and our joy increases!! Im going to need a larger dining room table here soon!! There must be room for highchairs and booster seats!! I Love That!!!
As Chels's mom so aptly says, Grandparenting ROCKS!!!
